The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have obviously led to transformative changes in how we communicate. In particular, the domain of writing has seen profound shifts. As someone who is constantly using, tinkering, and closely observing these changes, I’ve noticed a potential long-term pitfall of AI-generated content, specifically in automated AI content. Let’s examine the AI-human matrix.

The AI-Human Dilemma

Recently, I came across a YouTube video where a developer employed AI, to create auto-responses for a web form. The system cleverly personalized responses by integrating the user’s name and their feedback on the form. The catch? The AI response made it seem as though a real person was replying.

Such instances emphasize an essential principle that I firmly believe in: AI should never masquerade as a human. This ethos recalls the earlier days of chatbots. Remember when (and still happening) a chatbot inquired about your feelings, asking how you are, even though it was clearly a bot, completely lacking the capability to understand or empathize? Such interactions, although superficially engaging, often feel disingenuous and wrong. And long term will have detrimental effects to your business if you use them. It’s not authentic. 

Why Authenticity Matters

The rise of AI-driven communication tools like chatbots and automated feedback systems might initially seem promising. But as AI becomes more sophisticated, there’s a risk of blurring the line between machine and human communication. And that can lead to a credibility gap.

People are astute. They can discern genuine interactions from AI-generated ones. In a world that’s increasingly digital, there’s a growing hunger for authentic connections and relationships. I firmly believe that AI will force a strong return to humans craving authentic interactions, ones based on relationships.  (and yes, the old telephone call will come back).   Overreliance on AI, especially when it mimics human emotions, can and will erode trust; it’s not if, but how soon.

The solution? Keep AI autogenerated text AI, don’t let it be a person.

The AI-Human Matrix

Here’s a simplified guide based on my matrix for using AI in text generation:

  1. Human Messenger with Real (human) Context: When a real person is conveying personal, emotional, or human-related content, it’s acceptable. It’s genuine human communication.
  2. Human Messenger with Fake (anything not human) Context : A real person delivering non-human, factual, or objective information is also fine. After all, humans can provide any kind of information. So go ahead.
  3. AI Messenger with Fake Context: It’s acceptable for AI to generate text about non-human or factual content. This can include objective data, statistics, or impersonal information.
  4. AI Messenger with Real Context: This is where we must tread cautiously. AI shouldn’t automate messages that relate to human emotions, feelings, or personal experiences. It’s misleading and can diminish trust. It should even be clear that it’s not human.

For instance, consider an automated email response system. If someone reaches out with feedback, an AI-generated reply saying, “Thank you so much. We genuinely care about your opinion,” is misleading. A more transparent approach would be: “Your message has been received and will be passed on to [Name]. They will review it and get back to you.”. Simply enough, but keeping things authentic.

As AI continues to shape the future of communication, it’s crucial to remember the value of authenticity. While AI can be a powerful tool, it should complement, not replace, genuine human interactions. The guiding principle is simple: if you’re human, write whatever feels right. If you’re leveraging AI, maintain transparency and don’t feign humanity. In a world moving towards relationship-based interactions, genuine human connection is paramount.
